Grade and material selection are the starting point for any metric bolt procurement decision. The wrong grade in a structural or high-load application creates real risk. Here's how the most common options compare:- Grade 8.8 metric bolts are the general-purpose standard. Medium carbon steel, quenched and tempered, 800 MPa minimum tensile strength. Grade 8.8 is used for most industrial equipment and structural applications.
- Grade 10.9 metric bolts are high-strength, rated to 1040 MPa minimum. Specified for heavier loads and tighter safety margins in automotive, heavy equipment, and structural projects. Not interchangeable with 8.8.
- Stainless Steel (18-8 and 316) metric bolts are selected for corrosion resistance. 18-8 handles general indoor and light outdoor use; 316 is specified for marine and chemical environments.
Types and Styles of Metric Bolts at Fastco Inc.
Metric Hex Cap Screws
Hex Cap Screws are the most common style of metric bolts and are available in coarse and fine thread pitches across most diameters. Metric hex cap screws are available in Grade 8.8, 10.9, stainless, and zinc-coated. DIN 933 fully-threaded and partially-threaded options are available across multiple sizes.Metric Tap Bolts
Tap Bolts are fully threaded hex bolts designed for through-bolting applications. Available in larger diameters, including M20, M24, and M30, in multiple grades and finishes.Metric Full Thread Studs
Full Thread Studs provide threaded engagement on both ends for structural assemblies and applications where a standard bolt head would interfere. Stocked in M12 through M24 and beyond, including ASTM A193 B-7 specification.Metric Set Screws
Set Screws (Square Head) are available in M10 and M12, cup point style, for applications requiring a headless or flush-mount fastening solution.Metric Socket Shoulder Bolts
Socket Shoulder Screws and Shoulder Bolts are used for precision locating, pivoting, or guided-motion assemblies.Metric Bolt Finishes and Materials: Plain Steel, Zinc-Coated, and Stainless Steel
Finish selection affects corrosion protection and, in some environments, chemical or regulatory compliance. Finish options for our metric bolts include:- Plain (uncoated): standard for interior and protected applications, or assemblies that will be painted or coated after installation.
- Zinc (silver zinc): basic corrosion protection for general industrial and outdoor use.
- Yellow zinc: offers similar protection with a visual identification advantage. Frequently specified where Grade 10.9 bolts need to be distinguishable from lower-grade fasteners in the field.
- 316 stainless: for applications that require high corrosion resistance.
- Black paint is available on select stainless metric bolts, including DIN 933 stainless in M10.
Industries and Applications that Use Metric Bolts
Metric fasteners are the standard in most international industrial and OEM applications, and are increasingly used across the US. A few of the environments where we regularly supply metric bolts:- Manufacturing applications
- OEM equipment
- MRO and maintenance for industrial facilities
- Construction and structural steel applications
- Agricultural and heavy equipment
- Marine and outdoor installations requiring stainless or coated fasteners
- Automotive equipment manufacturing
Metric Bolt Ordering Guide
For buyers sourcing metric bolts at volume or on a recurring basis, a few things are worth building into your procurement process:- Standardize on grade and finish requirements across your application where possible. Running a mix of grades and finishes increases the risk of substitution errors and complicates purchasing. Keeping a consistent spec when possible to simplify stock management.
- Confirm thread pitch alongside diameter. M10 and M10-1.5 are not interchangeable with M10-1.25. Metric bolts use both coarse and fine thread pitches, and mismatched thread pairs will appear to engage before failing. All SKUs in our catalog include thread pitch in the product name.
- Factor lead time into non-stock orders. Most standard sizes and grades ship from stock. Less common configurations (long lengths, brass, specialty coatings, non-standard thread pitches) may require lead time. Contact us if you're working against a production schedule.
- Volume pricing is available. Most SKUs include volume discount tiers. For quantities beyond what's shown or for blanket order arrangements, request a quote, and we'll work through pricing directly.
